Babies and the Baby Belle

I love my aubergine plant, a Baby Belle. I've never grown one before but I love the purpleness, the pretty flower, how it will produce teeny tiny fruit that, no doubt, only I shall eat.

The other day I repotted it, with a little help. As soon as they heard the rustle of the compost bag, the smashing of broken pots, the little ones rushed over, eager to be involved. So how could I resist?

Some compost ended up on the patio, there was a fair bit of patting down so it needed fluffing up and the tub isn't as full as I'd like but they're happy so I'm happy and, I hope, the aubergine will be happy.

I loved all the comments on my last Aubergine Post so I'm going to look out some recipes to use up those gorgeous veggies that will be coming our way. I can't wait.

  1. My favourite ways to use aubergine are, Moussaka, and in roasted vegetables alongside peppers, onions, mushrooms etc; good cold too as a left over with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.

  2. I'm probably the only one that will eat my aubergines too. That is if I actually get any. No signs of any flowers.

  3. How is it that the British can say aubergine and we Americans call it eggplant? It's just not fair, I'll tell you. If we said aubergine, which is such a lovely word a) no one would know what we were talking about and b) even if they did they'd think we were being pretentious. Oh, UK, you call to me in myriad ways... :)

  4. Whoops. I must still have Smoke Brain (all the fires in CA--yet another reason to go the UK!). I did not mean to leave my aubergine comment as anonymous. Not at all. Kathryn

Zoe, I love roasted veggies so will (hopefully) get the chance to try that one.

Daphne, I've got one flower that is, fingers crossed, turning into a fruit. Can't wait!
